Distance Learning: Friday Spelling Test

One of the things that we are trying to do for our students is keep things as normal as possible but from home. On a normal Friday, we have a schoolwide assembly and generally after we have a Teamwide spelling test that is administered over the PA system by our amazing office staff.

So, today we decided it would be fun to have our own Distance Learning team assembly complete with karakia, mihi and waiata as we would any other day of the school term. It was great to see so many students hop on and join us this morning, especially since it was at 9am!

NOTE: Names have been blocked out because it is not Cybersmart to post last names online!
It was fun seeing some faces that I don't see in my general literacy and maths classes as we spent about 30 minutes together. Mrs. Flavelle from our office staff joined us and administered our spelling test. The students completed the test using a Google Form, which allowed their answers to be submitted right away. As always, the students with a perfect score will be entered into a drawing to win a special treat once we are back at school.

GOOGLE MEET TIP:
We are learning as we go along, and one of the coolest things we have learnt is to download the Chrome Extension "Google Meet Grid View" This is a great tool when you are meeting with more than 4 students so that you are able to see everyone in one view.

  1. Hi Angela,
I love this post. I 'went to' a webinar last night that talked a lot about how maintaining and building positive routines is an important part of distance schooling. It is great to hear team five are doing this with their spelling test. What changes did you notice in the test doing it distantly? How have you found students are responding to new learning routines so far?

    1. Hi Clarelle,
Thank you for taking the time to check out my blog. We have been having lots of fun trialing new and different ways to do things while distance schooling. Our kids loved having our spelling test! We had them fill in their answers using a Google Form instead of handwriting them. The majority of our students seem to be handling things well, but I think the biggest challenge for most of our older kids is simply managing themselves with everything else going on in their bubbles. They are already used to working from their site and our older children are generally able to get on with their learning independently while asking questions as needed.

  2. Ngā mihi nui Angela,
I have seen many public posts in the last few weeks including screen grabs of Google Meet sessions with learners' full names shared. Your post is a great Cybersmart reminder for us all about the importance of making smart decisions about what personal information we are sharing online.

A couple of days ago a feature was added to Grid View, Enabling Screen Capture Mode. Significantly this feature disables the names of all Meet participants... a good thing! Posted recommendation here

Thanks again for highlighting the importance of being Cybersmart
    Fiona
