Presenting at the Manaiakalani Boards' Forum

This past Thursday night, I was one of six CoL teachers asked to present my Inquiry representing the six different Community of Learning Achievement Challenges.

It was a great night to simply be reminded of the BIG picture that we are a part of in many ways, not only as CoL teachers but as Manaiakalani classroom teachers.

As the night began, participants were given the opportunity to take a look at our poster presentations for the Manaiakalani Hui  Then, after hearing about all of the various Manaiakalani is supporting teachers, and student learning, across the nation, it was our turn to share each of the Achievement Challenges and what our individual focus has been for the 2017 school year.

Here are some pictures of the night (taken by +Fiona Grant) and the slide deck that I presented, which was comprised of a mixture of slides from presentations that I have made over the past few weeks.

  1. Hi, it's great to see you sharing your learning with others in the community. It looks like a very informative time with a lot of learning going on. What do you feel was the most interesting thing you learnt/discovered from the evening?

    1. Hello! Thank you for your kind words. I have really enjoyed sharing my Inquiry the past few weeks with others. The Board's forum was very informative, but perhaps the most interesting thing was the the commonality of across our schools and students with vocabulary gaps. Realising that it is a struggle across the grade levels at every school has brought on so many conversations with teachers across our cluster.

  2. Hi Angela, it was lovely to get a snap shot of the work you have been doing this year for your inquiry, especially as it is similar to work I have been doing. Your results look very promising and you must be pleased that they are making a year and a half progress at least, in three terms. How do you get on finding complementary text? I have found this the most challenging part of making multimodal site presentations for reading. I hope you don't mind but I might have a wee peak at your site of inspiration! - Kate Mclachlan from Uru Manuka outreach cluster.

    1. Hi Kate! Thank you for your kind words, and I am so glad you are taking a look at my blog. I have found that wrapping my head around which way to go with complementary texts is often something that is difficult to do. However, I try very hard to come up with a term plan that begins by following our term Inquiry topic. Often, I quickly realise that I need to broaden the topic a bit (reading wider) and come up with a twist on the inquiry that enables a deeper understanding with my readers. That said, I often use Te Ara when I am having a difficult time finding something in a school journal.
